Google L3 New Grad Interview 2026: Gemini Round, HC, Team Match
Google's 2026 L3 loop: postings now require in-person interviews in most cases, Gemini is piloted in one round, and team match can outlast the loop by months.
Google's hiring committee did not go away in 2026. For a new grad, though, it is no longer the step that decides whether you get an offer. What changed sits on either side of it: the loop, where Google's own postings now say most hires need an in-person interview and a Gemini-assisted round is being piloted for junior roles, and the queue after it, where L3 candidates with positive feedback describe team-match waits of seven months to a year and packets that expire unused. Prepare for the loop as you would have in 2024, then prepare for team match as a separate interview you can lose.
Below: what changed and what didn't, who Google is hiring for 2027, the process stage by stage, how the committee and team match fit together now, what is actually known about the Gemini round, what gets people rejected, and a four-week plan.
What changed in 2026, and what didn't
| Part of the process | Status in 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Applications | Up to three per rolling 30 days; transcripts reviewed for new grads | Google, How we hire |
| Google Hiring Assessment | Agree/disagree workstyle questions, then a short coding challenge for some roles | Google; LeetCode Discuss, Oct 2026 |
| Phone screen | Unchanged: one coding problem in a shared document | LeetCode Discuss, Oct 2026 |
| Final round | "In most instances" in person, per postings | Google postings, 31 Oct 2026 |
| AI in interviews | Banned on Google's candidate pages; Gemini allowed in a pilot round | Google; Business Insider, May and Oct 2026 |
| Googleyness and Leadership | Adds a technical design conversation about your past work (pilot) | Business Insider, May 2026 |
| Early-career technical round | One traditional round replaced by open-ended engineering problems (pilot) | Business Insider, May 2026 |
| Committee review | Still described by candidates; some say it now runs after team match | Blind, Apr 2026 |
| Team match | No fixed clock; some teams add an AI fluency round | LeetCode Discuss, Sep–Oct 2026 |
The AI change is the one most people have heard about. In May, Business Insider reported an internal Google document describing a pilot, starting in the second half of 2026 on select US teams hiring early- and mid-career engineers, in which candidates use Gemini in a "code comprehension" interview to analyse an existing codebase, find bugs and improve performance. Interviewers grade "AI fluency", including prompt engineering, output validation and debugging (via Entrepreneur, 8 May 2026). The same document said the Googleyness and Leadership round would add a technical design conversation about the candidate's prior work, and that early-career applicants would see one traditional technical interview replaced by a session on open-ended engineering problems.
On 20 October, Business Insider reported that internal documents show these formats rolling out more broadly in phases through 2026, although a spokesperson still called them a pilot. The spokesperson said AI fluency is now required for all software engineering jobs, with AI product integration required for most roles outside entry level (via DNYUZ, 20 October 2026). Google is also working on letting interviewers draft feedback with Gemini, and is piloting Gemini transcription and note-taking in some interviews held on Google Meet.
That last detail is the change that touches the committee most directly. The committee never meets you; it reads what your interviewers wrote. When that record may start life as a transcript, the reasoning you say out loud counts for more than the code you leave on the page. Narrate decisions in full sentences.
Google's candidate pages have not caught up. How we hire says "AI tools are not permitted to be used during your interviews", and the interview tips page says the same of Google Search and AI (both retrieved 31 October 2026). Treat the ban as the default and the Gemini round as an exception your recruiter has to tell you about.
The in-person shift is further along. Sundar Pichai floated holding "some fraction of the interviews" in person at a February 2025 town hall (CNBC, March 2025). Today the interview tips page says Google has "reintroduced in-person interviews for some roles", usually after virtual first rounds, and all six early-career full-time postings we opened on 31 October, from US PhD roles to Mexico City and São Paulo, say that in most instances the role "requires in-person interviews as part of the hiring process". One L3 candidate described a Kirkland onsite on 27 February 2026, with flights and hotel booked, made up of two 45-minute coding rounds on Google Chromebooks in a shared document (LeetCode Discuss, 23 February 2026). Another described a whiteboard onsite where they did not have to run tests or write bug-free code (LeetCode Discuss, 10 February 2026).
Who Google is hiring for 2027
| Posting (US) | Level tag | Base pay listed | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software Engineer, Infrastructure, PhD, Early Career, 2027 Start | Mid | $147,000–$210,000 + 15% bonus target + equity | 12 US locations; in-person interviews in most instances |
| Software Engineer, AI/Machine Learning, PhD, Early Career, 2027 Start | Mid | $147,000–$210,000 + 15% bonus target + equity | Same in-person line |
| Software Engineering Intern, PhD, Summer 2027 | Intern | $118,000–$157,000 | Graduation date must be on the résumé |
| Forward Deployed Engineering Intern, BS/MS, Summer 2027 | Intern | $98,000–$131,000 | Open to bachelor's and master's students |
Source: Google Careers, searched 31 October 2026.
What is missing matters more than what is there. The same search showed no bachelor's or master's "Software Engineer, Early Career, Campus" posting for the US, and last cycle's US campus posting now returns "Job not found. This job may have been taken down." Google says most roles accept applications on a rolling basis until filled, so set a job alert now. The New Grad 2027 tracker lists which big-tech and quant roles are open this week.
When the posting does appear, the rules punish spraying. You can apply to at most three jobs in a rolling 30-day window, recruiters read your transcript, and Google asks people who were turned down to wait at least a year before reapplying for the same type of role (How we hire, retrieved 31 October 2026).
On pay, levels.fyi lists average US total compensation for a Google L3 software engineer at $210,067: $153,971 base, $42,276 a year in stock and $13,820 in bonus (updated 30 October 2026). And this is not a freeze. Alphabet had 204,757 employees on 30 September 2026, up from 190,167 a year earlier (Alphabet Q3 2026 results, 28 October 2026). The bottleneck is in matching, not in total hiring.
The process, step by step
| Stage | Format | What is graded | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application | Résumé plus transcript; three applications per 30 days | Minimum qualifications, then fit | Rolling |
| Google Hiring Assessment | Agree/disagree statements | Workstyle | Two days after recruiter contact in one Oct 2026 report |
| Coding challenge | Two DSA problems (some roles) | Tests passed | Taken about a week after the invite in the same report |
| Phone screen | One problem in a shared doc | Clarifying, coding, complexity | About a month after the challenge in the same report |
| Onsite | Three coding rounds and one Googleyness and Leadership round in a September 2026 L3 report; pilot rounds on some teams | Per-round rubric | Google quotes 6–8 weeks for the whole process |
| Decision | Packet review | Calibration and level | Not published |
| Team match | Calls with hiring managers; sometimes an extra AI fluency round | Fit with the team | No fixed clock |
The coding problems in 2026 L3 reports are classic algorithm questions. Two candidates got the same roster problem, one in an Indian phone screen and one in a first technical round: merge employee shifts into a timeline of non-overlapping segments listing who is on duty in each (LeetCode Discuss, 10 October and 16 September 2026). An L3 onsite in October paired three Googleyness questions, including what you do when someone takes credit for your work, with one embedded-systems coding problem: build any number of timers on top of a single hardware timer (LeetCode Discuss, 23 October 2026).
The committee and team match, as candidates see them now
Prep guides still describe the committee this way: four to six senior engineers from other teams who read the interview packets, can override the panel in either direction and can recommend a lower level. Approval is not an offer; it makes you visible to teams, and it typically lapses after six to twelve months without one (DG Learning, May 2026). Google's own How we hire page uses none of that language. It says only that "we take into account a number of perspectives to reach a decision".
What candidates report is a change of order. A Blind poster in April 2026 wrote that the committee review now comes after team match instead of before, which made the process less predictable, and that the packet expiry window had been shortened. An L3 candidate in India asked publicly in September which comes first for L3 loops right now (LeetCode Discuss, 24 September 2026). Another, who interviewed in March 2025, was asked for transcripts, expected salary and references only after a second team-fit call in February 2026, and still could not tell whether the packet had reached the committee (LeetCode Discuss, 11 March 2026).
| L3 team-match report | Date posted | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Positive feedback, current FAANG SDE-1 | 31 Oct 2026 | Seven months in team match, no calls |
| Four rounds done | 13 Oct 2026 | Team-fit call on 7 October, then rejected by the hiring manager |
| Positive feedback, India | 11 Oct 2026 | The matched team added an extra "AI Fluency round" |
| One-hour hiring-manager call | 27 Sep 2026 | Three questions, one of them "How do you use AI in your work?" |
| Cleared in May 2025 | 8 Apr 2026 | One call in October 2025; packet expired in June 2026 |
Source: LeetCode Discuss. One L4 candidate was told by one recruiter that feedback stays valid for 18 months and by another that it lasts one year (20 September 2026).
The takeaway: team match is an interview. The hiring manager is choosing from a pool of approved packets, and the questions now include how you use AI. Prepare for that call the way you prepared for the onsite.
The Gemini round: what is known, and what isn't
Known, from Google's documents as reported by Business Insider: the assistant is Gemini, not your own tools; the task is reading, debugging and improving an existing codebase; the grading covers prompt engineering, output validation and debugging; and the pilot started with junior and mid-level roles on select US teams before spreading. Aced, which collects candidate reports, adds that candidates who leaned on the AI without showing their own understanding received negative feedback. It also describes an L3 new grad who was given a single vague sentence — return how many lines a string fills at a given width — rushed into code, needed a hint, and was told afterwards the interviewer "didn't really care about the solution": the test was whether they would ask questions first.
Not known: the round's length, the size of the codebase, or its phases. Several prep blogs describe a 60-minute, three-phase format; Aced notes that those details belong to Meta's AI-enabled round, which we covered in Meta's AI-enabled coding interview. Ask your recruiter whether your loop includes the Google round at all. On LeetCode Discuss in late October, candidates were still asking each other what it involves (27 October 2026).
What gets people rejected
- Coding before clarifying. The vague-prompt L3 above, and an October phone-screen candidate who said they moved straight to code without clarifying the approach and needed a hint to find a bug (LeetCode Discuss, 10 October 2026).
- Letting the interviewer find your bugs. A March 2026 L3 candidate had to be pushed to trace their code line by line before finding two missed edge cases, and drew the lesson to do it before the interviewer does (LeetCode Discuss, 6 March 2026). On a whiteboard there are no tests to catch you.
- Using Gemini as an answer machine. The pilot grades output validation. Accept a suggestion you cannot explain and you have failed the part being scored.
- A thin story about your own project. The Googleyness and Leadership round now includes a design conversation about your past work. If your best project was a group assignment, be ready to defend the parts you decided.
- Treating team match as a formality. One October candidate lost the match after a single call.
- Letting the packet expire quietly. Ask your recruiter for the validity date in writing and keep other processes alive. The candidate who cleared in May 2025 waited out the full year and watched the packet lapse in June 2026.
A 4-week plan
- Week 1: application. Pick at most three postings. Rewrite your résumé against each posting's minimum qualifications, using Google's own formula: "accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z]". Have your transcript ready.
- Week 2: classic coding. Medium DSA in a plain document with no autocomplete; intervals and scheduling come up repeatedly. Trace every solution aloud line by line. Do two problems on a whiteboard, because the final round will probably be in a room.
- Week 3: reading code with an assistant. Take an unfamiliar open-source file, find one real bug, ask Gemini to explain the code, then check its answer against a test you write. Say your prompts out loud. Prepare two projects you can discuss at design depth: the trade-off, the alternative, what you would change.
- Week 4: team match. Write a two-minute pitch on what you want to work on. Prepare a specific answer to "How do you use AI in your work?" and five questions for a hiring manager. Rehearse the whole loop once under time pressure.
On a visa: Google sponsors at scale. It had 1,050 approved H-1B petitions for initial employment in fiscal 2025, fourth among all employers after Amazon, Meta and Microsoft (NFAP, November 2025). Two things are new. An in-person final round means travel, and the rules on leaving the country while OPT is pending are covered in our in-person interviews guide. A seven-month team match can also outlast your job-search window, so do not pause other applications while you wait. The $70,000 initial OPT fee DHS proposed on 8 October is still a proposal and not in effect (Boston University ISSO, 8 October 2026). In the UK, Google runs no graduate software engineer scheme, and its London summer 2027 internship ads say applicants will not be eligible for immigration sponsorship (EP Advisory, updated 21 October 2026).
Practice
Applr's Google L3 software engineer mock interview runs the coding and behavioural rounds at the L3 bar, so you can rehearse narrating your reasoning out loud, the habit both the committee packet and the Gemini round reward. Before you spend one of your three applications, check your résumé against Google's screen with the Google résumé polish guide.

Frequently asked questions
- Does Google still use a hiring committee for L3 new grads?
- Candidates still describe one, but Google's own How we hire page (retrieved 31 October 2026) does not mention a committee; it says Google takes into account 'a number of perspectives' to reach a decision. Prep guides describe a group of senior engineers from other teams who read the interview packets and can override the panel or change the level (DG Learning, May 2026). What has changed, according to candidates, is the order: a Blind poster in April 2026 said the committee review now happens after team match instead of before, and several 2026 L3 candidates could not tell which stage their packet was in.
- How long does Google team matching take for L3 in 2026?
- There is no fixed clock. On LeetCode Discuss, one L3 candidate with positive feedback said on 31 October 2026 that they had been in team match for seven months without a single call; another cleared the loop in May 2025, had one team-match call in October 2025 and saw the packet expire in June 2026. A third was turned down by the hiring manager after their first team-fit call in October 2026. Recruiters have quoted both one year and 18 months for how long feedback stays valid (LeetCode Discuss, September 2026).
- Are Google interviews in person again in 2026?
- For most roles, yes, at least for the final round. Google's interview tips page says it has 'reintroduced in-person interviews for some roles' and that initial interviews are often virtual first, and the six early-career full-time postings we checked on 31 October 2026 all say that in most instances the position requires in-person interviews. One L3 candidate described a February 2026 onsite in Kirkland with two 45-minute coding rounds on Google Chromebooks (LeetCode Discuss).
- Can you use AI in a Google interview in 2026?
- Only where Google hands it to you. Google's How we hire and interview tips pages both say AI tools are not permitted in interviews (retrieved 31 October 2026). The exception is a pilot 'code comprehension' round in which candidates use Gemini on an existing codebase and are graded on AI fluency, including prompt engineering, output validation and debugging (Business Insider via Entrepreneur, May 2026). Business Insider reported on 20 October 2026 that the format is rolling out more broadly, though Google still calls it a pilot.
- How much does a Google L3 software engineer make in 2026?
- Levels.fyi lists average US total compensation for Google L3 software engineers at $210,067: $153,971 base, $42,276 a year in stock and $13,820 in bonus (updated 30 October 2026). For comparison, Google's 2027-start PhD infrastructure posting lists a US base range of $147,000 to $210,000 plus a 15% bonus target and equity, and is tagged at the Mid level rather than Early.
- Is Google hiring bachelor's and master's new grads for 2027?
- Not through an open US posting as of 31 October 2026. A search of Google Careers that day showed PhD 'Early Career, 2027 Start' software roles and summer 2027 internships, but no bachelor's or master's 'Software Engineer, Early Career, Campus' posting, and last cycle's US campus posting returned 'Job not found'. Google says most roles take applications on a rolling basis, so set a job alert and apply the day it appears.
