Why Citadel QR is structurally different from SWE — research presentation IS the filter
Per Citadel's official QR Interview Process page (citadel.com/careers/career-perspectives/our-quantitative-research-interview-process), Citadel Securities' parallel page, Levels.fyi data, and aggregated candidate reports on TheWallStreetQuants and Glassdoor, Citadel QR is structurally a PhD-research role wrapped around live coding and brainteasers. The 2-round structure is deceptively short — Round 1 (live CoderPad, 45-60 min) gates on programming + research ability + DSA + problem-solving, all simultaneously. Round 2 (Superday, 3-5 back-to-back 60-min sessions) compresses probability brainteasers, stats/ML problems, coding, AND research presentation into one day.
The research presentation is uniquely weighted. PhD candidates discuss thesis with subject-matter interviewers who probe methodology, alternatives considered, and limitations adversarially. Per Glassdoor Quant Research Intern reports, intern week ends with a department-wide project presentation — this is not optional. Candidates who can't defend every methodological choice in their own work fail this round even with strong probability/coding signal.
Compensation is performance-pressure real. Per Levels.fyi: L1 $336K, L3 $642K, with QuantBlueprint reporting new-grad QR up to $651K mid in top pods ($350K base + $185K signing + $116K performance bonus). Industry signing range $50-200K (per TeamRora). Cultural: 'embracing failure as an opportunity to learn' (per Citadel Securities Candidate FAQs), but bonus tied to personal + pod + firm P&L. The 'bonus increases or you're fired' dynamic is real at the senior level.
