How to Get Into Two Sigma in 2026: QR vs SWE, Pay, Interviews

Two Sigma is hiring for 2027, and its quant research intern rate has gone up since July, even though its founders are still fighting over who runs the firm. On 25 October 2026 its careers site lists 10 campus postings, and the quant researcher track pays $75,000 more base than the engineering track: $300,000 against $225,000 for a New York new grad, and $5,800 against $4,325 a week for interns. Many applicants treat the two as interchangeable. They are separate tests, and the quant researcher posting explicitly takes bachelor's students.

Below: who Two Sigma hires and for what, the process stage by stage, six ways candidates fall out, what the October headlines mean for an applicant, and a four-week plan.

Who Two Sigma actually hires

Two Sigma is a systematic investment manager with about $85 billion under management (Hedgeweek, 20 Oct 2026) and roughly 2,000 staff (Bloomberg, Feb 2026, via Wikipedia). Its internships page says it takes about 80 interns each summer and receives tens of thousands of applications. Third-party guides put full-time graduate hiring at 200-300 a year (Quantt, May 2026), but cite no source for that, so treat it as a guess.

Of the 62 open roles on the careers site on 25 October 2026, these 10 are campus postings:

TSS Hardware Engineering Internship, Summer 2027New York, 10 weeksBachelor's or master's in EE, CE or CS$4,325/week

Two numbers in that table are new. The first is the quant research intern rate. Extern's guide, published in July 2026, recorded this posting at $4,900 a week for bachelor's students, $5,000 for master's and $5,500 for PhDs. On 25 October it reads $5,800 for all three, which is $9,000 more over ten weeks for an undergraduate. The second is the full-time researcher base. Two Sigma's 88 H-1B labor condition applications submitted so far in 2026 (h1bdata.info) list quantitative researcher wages from $205,000 to $280,000, most often $220,000, and software engineer wages most often at $165,000. The 2027 campus base of $300,000 is above every one of those researcher filings.

Engineering hires go into a pool. Every software engineering campus posting says students are hired into a general engineering role and matched to a team two to three months before they start. The research postings say nothing about matching; Quantt's guide describes meetings with two or three teams after an offer.

The fall calendar is narrow. Two Sigma's events page lists 10 events between 28 October and 17 November 2026 at five schools: Columbia, Princeton, Stanford, UC Berkeley and MIT. Princeton's slate includes a quant research poker tournament for BS and MS students. If you are not at one of those five, the portal is your front door. The research posting's note that more than half of Two Sigma's staff come from outside finance is aimed at you. Extern also lists a first-year software engineering internship with a Houston option; it was not among the open roles on 25 October.

The process, step by step

Two Sigma publishes more about its loop than most funds, on separate pages for software engineering and for quantitative research and modeling. This table combines those pages with third-party guides and community reports.

Quantt puts application-to-offer at four to eight weeks; Extern says six to ten.

Three details on Two Sigma's own pages should change how you prepare. Interviews run on Google Meet or Teams, and the firm says a day can end early if the fit looks wrong after a few rounds, so your first round has to land. The engineering page lists testing as a graded skill next to coding, and names concurrency, hash tables, object-oriented design and graph traversal as topics, with a possible systems-design exercise. And the firm says use of ChatGPT or any other AI tool is "strictly prohibited"; even suspected use can disqualify you.

On the research side, the most detailed recent account is a PhD new grad on Blind in December 2025. They passed an online coding test, then a virtual onsite of three rounds (data analysis, coding, statistics theory), and were invited to a three-hour session with hiring managers from teams they might join. A Two Sigma employee replied that this round is less technical, but that an approval round with senior leaders can follow it. On 1Point3Acres, the newest Two Sigma report, posted on 24 October 2026, is an intern phone screen titled "Data Analysis".

What gets people rejected

1. Applying to the wrong track. The quant researcher postings take bachelor's to PhD students; the internship wants about one year left in your program. The engineering internship takes rising juniors and seniors, master's and PhD students (Two Sigma internships page). An undergraduate with a real statistics or research record who applies only for software engineering is skipping a track that pays $75,000 more base. Two Sigma's pages give no limit on how many roles you can apply for, but Quantt reports a 12-month wait before reapplying after a rejection, so choose deliberately.

2. Drilling mental math for a statistics test. Two Sigma's research interview page names data analysis, coding and statistics. techinterview.org's 2026 difficulty index (updated 21 July 2026) scores Two Sigma 2 out of 5 on mental math and 1 out of 5 on trading games, against 5 out of 5 on probability. Spend the hours on regression, out-of-sample validation and cleaning a messy dataset in pandas, not on arithmetic speed.

3. Going quiet on the open-ended question. Two Sigma's advice is to think before you start, ask clarifying questions, offer a rough first pass, name its weaknesses and then improve it. Interviewers will give hints if you are stuck. A candidate who works silently and produces a model at the end gives them nothing to grade along the way.

4. Treating "passed the onsite" as "hired". In January 2023 a Blind poster passed Two Sigma's final round and moved into internal team matching, then was told hiring had closed for the quarter. In May 2023 another passed the technical rounds, waited three months for an open team, and took a different offer after the recruiter sounded pessimistic. Those were freeze years, but engineering hires are still matched to a team after the offer. Ask when matching happens and keep other processes going until you have a named team.

5. Using AI anywhere in the process. The ban covers the whole process, including the assessment. Two Sigma decides on its own judgment whether it suspects AI use.

6. Applying in November. Review is rolling, and the internship class is about 80 people. Community sources cited by Extern describe November onward as the point where many roles may already be filled. Today is 25 October.

If you need a visa

  • United States: Two Sigma Investments filed 101 H-1B labor condition applications in 2024, 105 in 2025 and 88 so far in 2026; 86 of the 2026 filings are for New York (h1bdata.info, retrieved 25 Oct 2026). No campus posting mentions sponsorship either way. Extern says interns can work on CPT and that full-time conversions are sponsored; confirm both with your recruiter.
  • OPT: On 8 October 2026 DHS proposed a $70,000 fee on schools for each initial OPT recommendation and $30,000 for each later one, which schools could pass on to students or employers. Comments close in early November and nothing is in effect (Fragomen, Oct 2026). If you will start on OPT, ask during the offer stage who would pay if the rule is finalized.
  • United Kingdom: The London engineering campus hire is the only UK posting. Two Sigma's UK entity, Two Sigma International Limited, holds an A-rated Skilled Worker licence on the Home Office register dated 23 October 2026. All four internships are in New York.
  • Asia: Two Sigma lists offices in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai, but none of the 10 campus postings is based there.

What the October headlines mean for you

The governance story is real. Co-CEO Scott Hoffman resigned on 31 March 2026, citing governance challenges (Young & Calculated, Apr 2026). On 19 October Bloomberg reported that Seth Platt, co-founder David Siegel's representative on the two-person management committee, will leave once a successor is named (via Hedgeweek, 20 Oct). Three days earlier, Bloomberg reported that the real estate unit had stopped fundraising and new investments and was cutting staff after raising less than half of a $2 billion target (via Bisnow, 19 Oct). In May the venture arm spun out as Deviation Capital with about $2 billion (WSJ, via Wikipedia).

The investment side looks different. Hedgeweek reported the Absolute Return Enhanced fund up 16% through September, with the firm saying 2026 was on track to be one of its strongest years. The cuts reported so far are in real estate and venture, not in the research and engineering seats being recruited, and pay on those seats went up this cycle. If the turmoil reaches you, it will most likely be through headcount at team matching. So ask direct questions: when matching happens, how many teams are hiring, and whether your offer names a team.

A 4-week plan

  • Week 1 (now): Apply before November. Choose your track from the table. For research, lead your résumé with a project on real data, which the posting asks for by name. For engineering, lead with systems you built and tested. If you are at one of the five event schools, sign up for this term's session.
  • Week 2: Assessment prep. Engineers: timed sets of two or three medium-hard problems in 90 minutes, in the language you will interview in. Researchers: timed pandas and numpy wrangling, fitting and checking a regression, and explaining when ordinary least squares fails.
  • Week 3: Technical rounds. Engineers: concurrency, hash tables, object-oriented design, and say your test cases aloud before you run code. Researchers: two open-ended dataset problems a week, out loud: define the target, build a baseline, validate it out of sample, explain how it could fail.
  • Week 4: Your own work. Prepare a 10-minute walkthrough of your best project for the hiring-manager round, and a list of team-match questions: which teams are hiring, start date, and visa timing.

§ 01FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How hard is it to get into Two Sigma?
Very hard on numbers. Two Sigma's internships page says it takes about 80 interns a summer from tens of thousands of applications. Acceptance-rate figures such as Extern's roughly 2% are community estimates, not company data. On 25 October 2026 the careers site listed 10 campus postings out of 62 open roles, nine of them in the US.
How much does Two Sigma pay new grads in 2027?
Posted New York base pay on 25 October 2026: $300,000 for a full-time campus quantitative researcher, $300,000 for an AI research scientist, and $225,000 for both the software engineering and data scientist campus hires. Interns get $5,800 a week in quant research, $4,325 a week in software engineering and $5,000 to $5,500 a week as AI research scientists. Each posting adds that a discretionary bonus can be a significant part of total pay.
What is the Two Sigma interview process?
Software engineers usually take a 90-minute HackerRank-style test (Quantt, May 2026), then three 60-minute technical interviews in a shared code environment in C, C++, Java or Python, an internal review, and further interviews on past projects (Two Sigma's engineering interview page). Quant researchers are tested on data analysis, coding and statistics; a December 2025 Blind poster was then invited to a three-hour round with hiring managers. Interviews run by video, and Two Sigma prohibits any AI tool during the process.
Can undergraduates apply for Two Sigma quant researcher roles?
Yes. Both the 2027 quantitative researcher internship and the full-time campus posting say all degree levels are welcome, from bachelor's to doctorate. The internship expects about one year left in your program. The AI research scientist roles are the exception: they take only master's students with work experience and PhD students.
Does Two Sigma sponsor H-1B visas for new grads?
Its filings say it hires people who need them. Two Sigma Investments filed 101 H-1B labor condition applications in 2024, 105 in 2025 and 88 so far in 2026 (h1bdata.info, retrieved 25 October 2026). The campus postings do not mention sponsorship, so confirm with your recruiter. In London, Two Sigma International Limited holds an A-rated Skilled Worker licence on the Home Office register dated 23 October 2026.
Should the Two Sigma founder feud put me off applying?
Not by itself. Bloomberg reported in October 2026 that Seth Platt will leave the two-person management committee and that the real estate unit stopped fundraising and cut staff. The same month, Hedgeweek reported the Absolute Return Enhanced fund up 16% through September, and campus pay for 2027 went up. The practical risk is at team matching, so ask when it happens and how many teams are hiring.
