OpenAI does hire new grads in 2026, but through one door at a time: on 15 October 2026 its job board listed 805 open postings and exactly one of them asked for 0-1 years of experience. That role is Software Engineer, Applied Emerging Talent (2027), a $180K-base product engineering job in San Francisco. Everything else with an early-career label, the Residency and the research cohort, has already closed for this cycle.
So the honest plan is narrow: aim at the Applied posting now, prepare for a coding loop that rewards building working software over reciting algorithms, and know where a visa can quietly end your application.
Who they actually hire
OpenAI is hiring fast in general. The Financial Times reported in March 2026 that the company planned to grow from about 4,500 to 8,000 employees by the end of the year (via Engadget, 21 March 2026). That growth shows up on the board: a snapshot of OpenAI's public Ashby feed on 15 October 2026 returned 805 postings, 552 of them in San Francisco and 379 with "engineer" in the title.
Almost none of that growth is aimed at people with no experience. Here is what the early-career map looks like right now:
| Door | Who it is for | Pay (posted) | Status on 15 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software Engineer, Applied Emerging Talent (2027) | 0-1 years, BS/MS or equivalent | $180K base + equity | Open, posted 14 Sep 2026 |
| Early Career Cohort (Research Scientist / Engineer) | Undergrads and recent grads with IMO, IOI, Putnam or ICPC-level results | $295K base + equity | Closed; cohort started 3 Jun 2026 |
| Residency 2026 | Unconventional backgrounds moving into research | $18.3K per month, 6 months | Closed; reviews began Jan 2026 |
| Internships | Students; Summer 2026 SWE intern was 12 weeks in SF and Seattle | Not posted | No intern posting on the board |

OpenAI's umbrella label for all of this is Emerging Talent, which Simplify's guide describes as full-time roles in research, applied engineering and product for people with 0 to 3 years of experience. In practice, the board decides what is real on any given week, and this week it is one Applied SWE post.
Read the Applied posting literally. It asks for JavaScript, React, a backend language ("we use Python"), some Postgres or MySQL, and "interest in AI/ML (direct experience not required)". The job is to own customer-facing ChatGPT and API features end to end and to talk to users. That is a product engineer profile, not an ML researcher profile. A full-stack project that real people used beats a fine-tuning notebook here.
The process, step by step
OpenAI does not publish its new-grad loop, so this table combines Simplify's 2026 guide with one candidate's account on Aced and question reports on Blind.
| Stage | Format | What is graded | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resume review | Recruiter reads application | Shipped products, ownership, fit with the posting | About 1 week (Simplify) |
| Recruiter screen | 30-45 min call | Motivation, track, logistics | Week 1-2 |
| Online assessment | Timed HackerRank-style problem, harder second part | Correct, working code | Before live rounds |
| First coding round | Live, Python by default | Clean implementation, talking through choices | Week 2-4 |
| Final round | Coding + behavioral, often over two days | Building a feature in layers; mission and judgment | Week 3-8 |
| Team matching | After the offer | Mutual fit with a team | Variable |
Simplify puts the whole thing at two to eight weeks and says Python is the default; other languages should be flagged before the round. Reality can run longer. The new-grad candidate on Aced (account posted mid-2026) said slots were so backed up that live rounds slipped to January and the offer came in February, about six months after applying.
The coding style is the part people misjudge. That Aced candidate's live round was an easy encode-and-decode-a-list-of-strings problem, and the final coding round was object-oriented: build a small chat interface with classes, then keep adding features on top. Blind threads point the same way. One October 2025 poster listed their phone-screen prep as resumable iterators, symlink path resolution and a multithreaded web crawler, and a November 2025 candidate said their recruiter told them the round would not be LeetCode-style. Another Blind post from July describes a four-part problem that builds up a `cd` command returning a normalized absolute path.
Not every source agrees. techinterview.org's July 2026 guide describes two rounds of LeetCode-style medium-to-hard problems for Applied and Infrastructure tracks, and says AI-tool rules in interviews vary by track: mixed for Applied, prohibited for Infrastructure coding. Ask your recruiter which version you are getting and whether AI tools are allowed. Both are fair questions.
What gets new grads rejected
Each of these is tied to a source above rather than to guesswork.
1. Treating it as an ML job. The only open early-career posting is product engineering in React and Python. A resume that leads with a Kaggle score and buries the app you built is aimed at the wrong role.
2. Drilling only LeetCode. Multiple Blind reports describe multi-part implementation problems (iterators, path resolution, crawlers) that get harder in stages. Running out of time on part three because part one was messy is a common way to fail.
3. Letting the OA expire. The Aced candidate let the first assessment link lapse and needed a recruiter to resend it. You may not get that favour.
4. A flat answer on safety and the mission. The same candidate's behavioral covered why OpenAI and what AI safety should mean, and it turned into a real debate. Have an opinion you can defend, including a disagreement with the company.
5. Waiting silently through delays. Blind's OpenAI channel is full of timeline posts: loops with no answer after 15 days, an onsite followed by silence, and an August post about final rounds being paused after four cleared rounds. Send one polite follow-up a week and keep other processes alive.
6. Assuming the visa is handled. See the next section.
The visa question, honestly
OpenAI clearly does sponsor at scale. Ellis's aggregation of Department of Labor data (updated August 2026) shows OpenAI OpCo filing 28 H-1B LCAs in 2023, 96 in 2024 and 165 in 2025, with a $255,000 median for "Member of Technical Staff (Software Engineer)". Green-card filings are tiny by comparison: two PERM filings in 2025 on the same page.
But no posting says it. None of the 805 postings on 15 October 2026 states a sponsorship policy either way, and the closed Early Career cohort required authorization to work in the US by the June start date. For an F-1 student on OPT, that means the question has to come from you, on the first recruiter call, phrased plainly: will this role support H-1B and, later, a green card?
There is also a fresh cost risk. On 8 October 2026 DHS proposed a $70,000 fee for a first OPT recommendation and $30,000 for a later one; Boston University's international office stresses this is a proposal only, with comments open about 30 days (BU ISSO, 8 Oct 2026). Our weekly roundup tracks it: hiring week 42.
Pay and equity
The Applied posting lists a $180K base plus equity. Levels.fyi's self-reported L2 average for OpenAI software engineers in the US is about $247.5K total: roughly $169.6K base and $77K a year in stock (retrieved October 2026). The research cohort posted a much higher $295K base, which tells you how differently OpenAI prices research talent.
Equity terms have loosened. The Neuron, citing a Wall Street Journal report, wrote in December 2025 that OpenAI removed the vesting cliff for new hires entirely, after cutting it to six months earlier that year. For a new grad that matters: leaving after eight months no longer means walking away with nothing vested.
A 4-week plan
- Week 1: Rewrite the resume for the posting. Lead with one full-stack project in React and Python with a database behind it, and say who used it. Run it through the free ATS resume checker, then tailor it with the OpenAI resume polish page. Apply to the Applied Emerging Talent (2027) role this week; it has been live since 14 September.
- Week 2: Practise layered implementation. Pick three problems that grow in parts (an LRU cache with TTL, a key-value store with transactions, a path resolver) and do each in 60 minutes in Python, writing tests as you go.
- Week 3: Build-a-feature rounds. Take a small object-oriented spec, such as a chat room with commands, and extend it three times without rewriting the core. Do one session under a timed mock: Applr's OpenAI software engineer mock interview runs this live-coding format with follow-ups.
- Week 4: Mission and judgment. Write down two things you think OpenAI gets right and one you would change, then practise saying them out loud in two minutes. Line up the visa question for the recruiter call. If you are also applying to AI labs elsewhere, compare doors with our Anthropic new grad guide.
Who should aim where
- Undergrad or master's with product projects: the Applied Emerging Talent (2027) posting, now.
- Olympiad, Putnam or ICPC results plus research interest: watch for the next Early Career cohort; prepare with the OpenAI research engineer mock.
- Career changer from physics, maths or neuroscience: the Residency, when a new cycle appears.
- F-1 student who needs sponsorship: apply, but run two or three parallel processes. Our New Grad 2027 tracker lists which programs are open.

Frequently asked questions
- Does OpenAI hire new grads in 2026?
- Yes, but through a narrow door. On 15 October 2026 OpenAI's Ashby job board listed 805 open postings, and exactly one asked for 0-1 years of experience: Software Engineer, Applied Emerging Talent (2027) in San Francisco, published 14 September 2026 with a $180K base plus equity. OpenAI's Emerging Talent umbrella also covers internships, the Residency and an Early Career research cohort, but the 2026 Residency and the cohort are closed.
- How much does OpenAI pay new grads?
- The Applied Emerging Talent (2027) posting lists a $180K base plus equity. Levels.fyi's self-reported L2 average for OpenAI software engineers in the US is about $247.5K total, made up of roughly $169.6K base and $77K a year in stock (retrieved October 2026). The closed 2026 Early Career research cohort posted a $295K base.
- What is the OpenAI new grad interview process?
- Simplify's 2026 guide describes four to five stages: recruiter screen, online assessment, a first coding round, a final coding round and a behavioral round, taking two to eight weeks, with team matching after the offer. One new-grad candidate on Aced described a timed HackerRank-style OA, an easy live coding round, and a two-day final with an object-oriented build-a-feature exercise and a behavioral that turned into a conversation about AI safety.
- Does OpenAI sponsor H-1B visas for new grads?
- OpenAI files H-1B paperwork at scale: Ellis's aggregation of Department of Labor data shows OpenAI OpCo filing 165 H-1B LCAs in 2025, up from 28 in 2023, with a $255,000 median for its software-engineer title. But none of the 805 postings on 15 October 2026 states a sponsorship policy either way, and the Early Career cohort required US work authorization by the start date. Ask the recruiter on the first call.
- Is the OpenAI Residency open for 2027?
- Not as of 15 October 2026. The 2026 Residency, a six-month paid research program at $18.3K a month in San Francisco, opened applications in December 2025 and has since closed, and no Residency posting appeared on OpenAI's job board on 15 October 2026. Simplify's guide notes that past cohorts were reviewed from around September or October, so check the board weekly.
