Nearly every big London quant firm can sponsor you. Far fewer say they will. We checked the Home Office register of licensed sponsors dated 8 October 2026: Jane Street, Optiver, HRT, XTX, Jump, DRW, Five Rings, Squarepoint, QRT, Marshall Wace and G-Research's staff entities all hold A-rated Skilled Worker licences. Only a handful say in their own postings that a given role comes with sponsorship. The salary bar is almost never the problem. The real constraints are which postings sponsor, whether internships require existing work rights, and a Graduate visa that shrinks to 18 months for applications made from 1 January 2027 (GOV.UK).
This post maps each firm's licence against what the firm says about visas in public, and explains how the rules apply to a quant offer.
The 30-second verdict
The register shows who can sponsor. The firm's own words show who has told you they will. Here is both, for the firms international students ask about most.
| Firm | Licensed UK entity (register, 8 Oct 2026) | What the firm says publicly | Signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marshall Wace | Marshall Wace Asset Management Limited (Skilled Worker, plus Graduate Trainee route) | 2027 London software graduate and technology intern postings: "able to offer VISA sponsorship for this role" | Explicit yes |
| HRT | Hudson River Trading Europe Ltd., HRT Research UK Ltd, HRTSVC Ltd | 2027 algorithm development internship lists "Work Visa Sponsorship" as a perk | Explicit yes |
| G-Research | Alastair LLP, Braunford LLP (its staff entities, per eFinancialCareers) | Relocation page: all immigration costs covered, with an expert consultant | Explicit yes |
| XTX Markets | XTX Research LLP | Careers page lists "Visa & Immigration Support" | Yes, no detail |
| Maven Securities | Maven Securities Holding Limited | FAQ: sponsorship available for graduate roles; interns must already have the right to work | Grads yes, interns no |
| QRT | Qube Research & Technologies Limited | One 2027 quant developer/SWE intern-graduate listing tagged "No visa sponsorship" (Canary Wharfian) | Varies by role |
| Jane Street | Jane Street Europe Limited | Internships page names London, says nothing on visas | Licensed, silent |
| Optiver | Optiver UK Limited | Careers listing page says nothing on visas | Licensed, silent |
| Squarepoint | Squarepoint Capital LLP | London Graduate Quant Developer posting says nothing on visas | Licensed, silent |
| Citadel / Citadel Securities | Citadel Enterprise Europe Limited; no entity named "Citadel Securities" on the register | Not stated | Ask which entity employs you |
Other A-rated Skilled Worker licences on the same register: Jump Trading International Limited, DRW Investments (UK) Ltd, Five Rings Capital LLP, Tower Research Capital Europe Limited, three Susquehanna entities, IMC London Limited, Flow Traders UK Services Ltd, Akuna Europe Limited, Virtu Europe Trading Limited, Two Sigma International Limited, D. E. Shaw & Co. (U.K.), Ltd., Millennium Capital Management Limited, Point72 UK Limited, Man Group, Winton, Quadrature Capital, Headlands Tech UK and Old Mission Europe LLP.
Two caveats. First, the register lists legal entities, not brands, so a firm can hire you through an entity whose name you would not search for. G-Research is the clearest example: the licence sits with Alastair LLP and Braunford LLP, which eFinancialCareers (January 2026) identified as its UK staff entities. Second, a licence is permission, not a promise. One Blind commenter in March 2025 put it bluntly in a thread from a Cambridge CS graduate with London HFT experience who needed sponsorship: their chances were good, but sponsored UK engineers without a master's were rare in their experience.
Answer the right-to-work questions on application forms truthfully. Marshall Wace's 2027 London graduate form asks directly whether you will have the right to work in the UK after graduation, and Maven's FAQ asks applicants to share up-to-date visa status on the form, with sponsorship discussed with eligible candidates later in the process. These firms treat the visa as late-stage admin. Fudging the answer to look sponsorship-free, or skipping the application because the question exists, are both worse than a plain answer.
The rules, applied to a quant offer
The Skilled Worker rules sound strict until you put a quant salary next to them.
| Rule | What GOV.UK says (retrieved Oct 2026) | What it means for a quant grad |
|---|---|---|
| General salary threshold | £41,700 or the occupation's going rate, whichever is higher | Cleared by any front-office quant offer |
| Going rate, programmers and software developers (2134) | £54,700 standard | The usual code for quant developers |
| Going rate, actuaries, economists and statisticians (2433) | £55,100 standard | Often used for research roles |
| Going rate, finance and investment analysts (2422) | £45,800 standard | Some analyst and trading roles |
| New entrant discount | 70% of the going rate, minimum £33,400, if under 26 or switching from a Student or Graduate visa; total stay capped at 4 years including Graduate visa time | Gives the firm room, rarely needed |
| STEM PhD discount | 80% of the going rate, minimum £33,400 | Relevant to some research hires |
| English | B2 for new applicants; a UK degree taught in English exempts you | UK graduates are covered |
| Immigration Skills Charge | £1,320 for the first year for a large sponsor; no charge if you switch from a study visa | Switching straight from Student status saves the firm money |
For scale: HRT's 2027 London internship posting lists a weekly base of £4,350, plus company-paid housing and meals. That is ten weeks of intern pay above the full-year general threshold. Nobody is turned down at these firms for missing the salary floor.
The cost line is the one most students miss. GOV.UK charges large sponsors £1,320 for the first 12 months and up to £6,600 over five years, but the charge does not apply when a worker switches from a study visa. If your start date allows you to move from Student to Skilled Worker without going through the Graduate visa, you are cheaper to hire. Raise that with the recruiter once you are in the process, not on the application.
The clock: 18 months from 2027
GOV.UK now says the Graduate visa runs for 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. PhD graduates keep 3 years, and the visa cannot be extended.
QuantNet's 7 September 2026 analysis of the change makes a point that matters more for quant than for most fields. Most UK quant master's programmes last one year, and graduate applications for the following year are often already open when students arrive in September. Some trading firms also fill seats on a rolling basis, so the published deadline is not the real one. The shorter visa does not cause that problem, but it leaves six fewer months to recover from a missed cycle. The same piece warns that a smaller employer may hire you on Graduate visa work rights and then decline to sponsor when that visa runs out.
The Home Office's latest rules change, HC 584 (published 3 September 2026), did not move the Skilled Worker salary thresholds, so the numbers in the table above still hold for this recruiting season.
Which firms to prioritise
- You are a master's student starting a one-year UK programme in 2026-27. Apply in the autumn cycle, not after Christmas. If you finish in 2026, applying for the Graduate visa by 31 December 2026 keeps the 2-year version. Put the explicit-yes firms (Marshall Wace, HRT, G-Research, XTX, Maven for graduate roles) at the top of your list.
- You are an undergraduate who needs a summer internship. Check each posting. Maven's FAQ rules out sponsorship for interns; Marshall Wace's and HRT's 2027 internship postings offer it. Check your Student visa's work conditions against the internship dates with your university's visa team before you accept.
- You are a PhD. Your Graduate visa is 3 years and the STEM PhD discount applies, so the visa question is mostly solved. Pick on research fit. G-Research's PhD prizes and postgraduate researcher track are a direct route.
- The firm is licensed but silent (Jane Street, Optiver, Squarepoint). Do not self-select out. A licence plus a large international workforce is a strong signal. Ask the recruiter after your first interview, framed as logistics: "Which entity would employ me, and will you assign a certificate of sponsorship?"
- You are weighing London against Amsterdam. The Netherlands runs a separate system, and our IMC vs Optiver comparison covers both Amsterdam houses.
What to do this week
1. Download the current register from GOV.UK and search for the legal entity, not the brand. If a firm you want is not there under any name, ask before you invest a month in its process.
2. Read the posting for the exact line: "able to offer visa sponsorship", "must have the right to work", or silence. Silence means ask, not no.
3. Check your Graduate visa date. If you finish in 2026, apply on or before 31 December 2026 for 2 years instead of 18 months.
4. Check every London deadline on the New Grad 2027 tracker, and read the 2027 quant internship timeline for which firms opened in July and which in August.
5. Practise the interview the licence is worth nothing without. Try the Optiver trader mock or the Jane Street quantitative researcher mock. For the London research-heavy loops, read how to get into G-Research and XTX Markets vs Jane Street.

Frequently asked questions
- Which London quant firms are licensed to sponsor Skilled Worker visas?
- On the Home Office register of licensed sponsors dated 8 October 2026, A-rated Skilled Worker licences are held by UK entities of Jane Street, Optiver, Hudson River Trading, XTX (XTX Research LLP), Jump Trading, DRW, Five Rings, Tower Research, Susquehanna, IMC, Flow Traders, Akuna, Virtu, Two Sigma, D. E. Shaw, Squarepoint, Qube Research & Technologies, Millennium, Point72, Marshall Wace, Maven Securities, Quadrature and others. G-Research's staff entities Alastair LLP and Braunford LLP are also listed. A licence means the firm can sponsor, not that it will sponsor every hire.
- Is the Skilled Worker salary threshold a problem for quant graduates?
- Almost never. GOV.UK sets the general threshold at £41,700 or the occupation's going rate, whichever is higher, and the standard going rate for programmers and software developers (code 2134) is £54,700. Graduates switching from a Student or Graduate visa can be paid 70% of the going rate with a £33,400 floor. HRT's 2027 London internship alone pays a £4,350 weekly base, per its posting.
- How long is the UK Graduate visa for students finishing in 2027?
- GOV.UK says the Graduate visa lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027; PhD graduates get 3 years. It cannot be extended, so a quant graduate who wants to stay usually needs to move to Skilled Worker sponsorship before it ends.
- Does Jane Street sponsor visas in London?
- Jane Street Europe Limited holds an A-rated Skilled Worker licence on the 8 October 2026 register. Its internships page names London as an internship location but does not mention visas, so ask the recruiter directly. A 2024 Blind thread asking the same question got a one-word yes, which is anecdote, not policy.
- Do London quant internships sponsor visas?
- It varies by firm and by posting. Marshall Wace's 2027 London technology internship says it can offer visa sponsorship, and HRT's 2027 internship posting lists work visa sponsorship as a perk. Maven Securities' FAQ says internship applicants must already hold the right to work in the region, while it offers sponsorship for graduate roles.
