The question people type, "which quant firms open in August", has an awkward answer for the 2027 cycle. By the time August 2026 arrived, Citadel, Jane Street, HRT, SIG, IMC and D. E. Shaw had already been taking summer 2027 applications for weeks. August was when the London and Amsterdam offices followed and when the online assessments started going out (Quantt, August 2026; Young & Calculated, September 2026).
The thing most applicants get wrong is reading an open portal as an open seat. Almost none of these postings carries a deadline, review is rolling, and Quantt's guide puts it bluntly: an application in August and an identical one in November can have very different odds.
Who opened when
Dates below are from firm postings and dated third-party trackers that I read in October 2026. Where a tracker gives an "expected" date rather than an observed one, the table says so.
| Firm | US postings live | Europe / Asia | Posted deadline | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citadel / Citadel Securities | 6 July 2026; 19 Citadel Securities intern postings in July | Europe open, no month published | None | Extern (Jul 2026); Quantt (Sep 2026) |
| Jane Street | New York live by 12 July 2026 | London since August; Hong Kong SWE intern closes 31 Jan 2027 | Hong Kong only | Young & Calculated (Sep 2026); Quantt (Sep 2026); GradConnection |
| Hudson River Trading | 13 July 2026 | London and Singapore on the same postings | Winter programs: 16 Oct 2026 | Quantt (Oct 2026) |
| SIG | Master's systematic trading internship posted 1 July 2026 | London QT internship posted 15 July 2026 | None; "strongly encouraged to apply early" | tradermath; Kadoa |
| IMC | Early July 2026 | Amsterdam and London in August | None; start date fixed at 7 June 2027 | Young & Calculated; IMC posting; Quantt |
| D. E. Shaw | Early July 2026 | London systems intern open | None; Extern calls 1 July to 15 August the early window | Extern (Jul 2026); D. E. Shaw posting |
| Two Sigma, Optiver (US) | Live by 12 August 2026 | Optiver Amsterdam and London in August | None; Optiver has an 8-month cool-off | Extern (Aug 2026); Quantt (Sep 2026) |
| Five Rings | Posting live July 2026 | New York only | None; "Interviews will begin in September 2026" | Five Rings posting |
| Akuna Capital | Quant dev and strategy intern open; Trading Sneak Peek interest form posted 8 Sep 2026 | Chicago only | None | Akuna posting; Kadoa |
Two outliers are worth knowing. Point72 opened its summer 2027 academy applications on 3 March 2026, eighteen months before the start date (Young & Calculated, September 2026). And the buy side in London is slower on paper: Trackr's September 2026 timeline, which uses previous-cycle timings as expected dates, lists Squarepoint on 2 July, DRW on 13 July, Jane Street on 4 August, G-Research on 22 August, SIG on 25 August, IMC on 27 August, Qube on 28 August, Maven on 7 September, Flow Traders on 18 September, Citadel Securities on 22 September and Optiver on 21 November.
The process, step by step
| Stage | When, 2027 cycle | What is graded | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application | July to August 2026 for US offices; August for London and Amsterdam | Résumé screen; one role only at HRT, one application per role per year at IMC | Firm postings; Quantt (Sep 2026) |
| Online assessment | September to October; often within 48 to 72 hours of applying | Probability, mental maths, coding depending on track | Quantt (Aug 2026); QuantVault (Jul 2026) |
| First-round interviews | October to November at Jane Street; October to December at Citadel | Reasoning out loud, estimation, markets intuition | Quantt (Sep 2026) |
| Final round / Super Day | November to December at Jane Street; November to January at Citadel; in person | Several back-to-back technical interviews | Quantt (Sep 2026) |
| Offers | Bulk at large firms between late October and mid-December; Jane Street December to January; Citadel January to February | D. E. Shaw: 18 to 21 days from active review to offer | Quantt (Aug, Sep 2026); Extern (Jul 2026) |
| Internship | 10 to 13 weeks from June; IMC fixes 7 June 2027 as day one | On-desk performance; return-offer decision | Firm postings |
One rule most guides skip: D. E. Shaw's own recruiting letter to university departments says it reviews on a rolling basis, plans to begin interviewing "in the coming weeks" of opening, and does not set time limits on its offers regardless of whether a student is in process elsewhere (D. E. Shaw letter via Georgetown Economics). Not every firm is that patient, so ask each recruiter how long an offer stands.
What gets people rejected, timing edition
1. Waiting for a deadline that does not exist. Jane Street's internship page lists tracks, offices and a May-to-September window but no closing date. Young & Calculated's August 2026 piece puts the problem in one line: an open application form carries no information about whether seats remain.
2. Applying to three roles at one firm. HRT says apply to the one role you are most interested in and it will consider you for everything open. IMC allows one application per role each year. Optiver's posting adds an eight-month cool-off after any recent quantitative assessment or interview.
3. Starting prep when the assessment arrives. QuantVault's July 2026 timeline says online assessments commonly land within 48 to 72 hours of applying. Simplify's 2027 guide says the hardest part is not the LeetCode, it is the timing.
4. Reading "no reply yet" as a verdict. A Blind poster in August 2020, a Microsoft intern who had applied to Jane Street, Citadel and Two Sigma through career pages, asked why there was silence after about ten days; the replies pointed at referrals and at the résumé rather than the wait. The platforms have changed since, but the pattern of a quiet first two weeks has not.
5. Assuming one failed loop ends the story. In a Blind thread from November 2020, a Jane Street employee said that for intern and new-grad roles it is fine to apply again and that many people received offers the second time. Other posters disagreed, so treat it as encouragement, not policy.
6. Benchmarking against the wrong cohort. Jane Street takes roughly 250 interns from more than 50,000 applications (Quantt, September 2026). Citadel and Citadel Securities accepted 0.36% of 115,900-plus applicants for the 2026 class, about 350 seats (Extern, July 2026). Those numbers describe the whole pool, not the people who applied in the first two weeks.
Pay, so you know what you are racing for
Posted figures only, retrieved October 2026:
- SIG: $8,600 a week for Master's and PhD quantitative systematic trading interns in New York, with housing, meals and a signing bonus (posting via tradermath).
- HRT: $5,800 a week in New York, £4,350 in London, SGD 7,650 in Singapore, plus company-paid housing and meals (posting via The Muse).
- Citadel: $4,500 to $5,800 a week for quantitative research analyst interns, plus a sign-on bonus and housing stipend or covered accommodation (posting via Built In).
- Two Sigma: $4,900 a week for bachelor's, $5,000 for master's, $5,500 for PhD candidates, 10 weeks in New York (Two Sigma posting).
- D. E. Shaw: $25,000 a month, a $25,000 sign-on bonus, furnished housing or a $10,000 allowance, plus $3,300 for self-study materials and $4,000 for equipment (D. E. Shaw posting).
- IMC: $250,000 annualised base for Chicago quantitative trader interns (IMC posting). Jane Street and Jump Trading post $300,000 annualised (tradermath, September 2026). Five Rings posts $300,000 annualised plus sign-on and corporate housing (Five Rings posting). Optiver lists $70,000 to $88,000 for its summer 2027 quantitative intern (Extern, August 2026). Akuna starts at $145,000 annualised (Akuna posting).
Quantt's August 2026 guide gives London top-firm rates of £8,000 to £16,000 a month. Return-offer rates are not published by anyone; Quantt reports community figures above 80% at Jane Street and 70 to 80% at Optiver, and labels them as reports.
International students
Three things change for you. First, work authorisation is written into some postings: Five Rings requires legal eligibility to work in the United States and notes sponsorship may be required, and Akuna requires US work authorisation for both its summer internship and its Trading Sneak Peek weeks (postings retrieved October 2026). Confirm with your international office that a June start fits your school's CPT process before you accept. Second, final rounds are in person at the firm's office from November to January (Quantt, September 2026), which means flights in exam season; ask the recruiter early whether travel is covered, as the Citadel and Optiver postings say it is. Third, the London and Hong Kong pipelines run slightly later than New York: Jane Street London opened in August and its Hong Kong software engineering internship accepts applications until 31 January 2027, so a UK or Asia office can be a second shot if New York is already full.
What to do this week
- Apply today to anything still open. Do not wait for the midterm to finish. HRT's winter programs close on 16 October 2026 (Quantt, October 2026); everything else is rolling and quietly filling.
- Pick one role per firm and make the résumé match it. The free ATS resume checker catches formatting that breaks parsers before a human sees it.
- Be assessment-ready within 48 hours. Probability, expected value and mental arithmetic for trading tracks; LeetCode medium in Python or C++ for engineering tracks.
- Decide your lane before the first round. If you are unsure whether you are a trader, researcher or developer candidate, read quant trader vs researcher vs developer first.
- Log every application in the New Grad 2027 tracker and note the day you applied; 48 to 72 hours later, check the spam folder.
Practice
- Trading tracks: the Optiver trader mock and the SIG quantitative trader mock run the rapid-fire probability format that opens most first rounds.
- Research tracks: the Jane Street quantitative researcher mock and the Citadel quantitative researcher mock. Applr's mocks follow up on your reasoning, which is what a Super Day interviewer does after your first answer.
- For a firm that told you the date interviews start, read how to get into Five Rings.

Frequently asked questions
- When did summer 2027 quant internship applications open?
- Earlier than August. Citadel and Citadel Securities had US intern postings live on 6 July 2026 (Extern, July 2026), Jane Street's New York postings were live by 12 July and HRT opened on 13 July (Young & Calculated, September 2026; Quantt, October 2026). SIG's Master's systematic trading internship was posted on 1 July (tradermath, September 2026). By 12 August, IMC, SIG, Optiver, HRT, D. E. Shaw, Two Sigma and Citadel Securities all had live summer 2027 postings (Extern, August 2026). London and Amsterdam offices mostly followed in August.
- Do quant internships have application deadlines?
- Almost none of the big US postings do. Jane Street's internship page states no deadline, and the Citadel, Two Sigma, IMC, HRT and D. E. Shaw postings reviewed in October 2026 carry none either. The exceptions found: Jane Street's Hong Kong software engineering internship closes on 31 January 2027 (GradConnection), and HRT's winter programs close on 16 October 2026 (Quantt, October 2026). Everything else is rolling, which is why timing matters more than a deadline would.
- Is it too late to apply for a 2027 quant internship in October?
- Not necessarily, but you are behind. Quantt's 2027 guide (August 2026) puts online assessments in September to October, first rounds in October to November, and the bulk of offers at large firms between late October and mid-December. Extern reports D. E. Shaw moves from active review to offer in about 18 to 21 days. Apply this week, treat the online assessment as arriving within days, and do not wait for a deadline that does not exist.
- How much do quant interns get paid in 2027?
- Posted figures, not estimates: SIG pays Master's and PhD systematic trading interns $8,600 a week in New York; HRT pays $5,800 a week in New York, £4,350 in London and SGD 7,650 in Singapore with housing and meals; Citadel posts $4,500 to $5,800 a week; Two Sigma posts $4,900 to $5,500 a week by degree level; D. E. Shaw posts $25,000 a month plus a $25,000 sign-on bonus; IMC posts a $250,000 annualised base and Five Rings $300,000 annualised (firm postings and tradermath, retrieved October 2026).
- Can I apply to more than one role at the same quant firm?
- Check each firm's rule before you do. HRT says apply to the one role you are most interested in and it will consider you for all open positions. IMC allows one application per role each year and encourages focusing on a single role. Optiver's summer 2027 posting has an eight-month cool-off if you completed an assessment or interview for a quantitative role recently (postings retrieved October 2026). A second application rarely helps and can cost you the cycle.
