How to Get Into Five Rings in 2026: The Speed Gate

Five Rings cuts most candidates on pace, not difficulty: the timed mental-math screen, the 30-second rapid-fire round, who they hire, and a 4-week plan for 2027.

How to Get Into Five Rings in 2026: The Speed Gate

Five Rings will not reject you for being bad at maths. It rejects people for being slow. Its entire funnel is built to find candidates who can answer a hard probability question in the time most people take to finish reading it: a timed, webcam-on mental-math screen, then a first interview of 10 to 15 rapid-fire questions at about 30 seconds each (Extern, updated September 2026), which is where most of the field is cut. The mistake nearly everyone makes is preparing for difficulty when they should be preparing for pace.

What changed for the 2027 cycle is geography. Five Rings' own Greenhouse board, retrieved 1 October 2026, lists Campus Full Time 2027 Quantitative Trader roles in New York, London and Amsterdam, and a Campus Full Time 2027 Software Developer role in both New York and London. A January 2020 Blind thread that still circulates describes the firm as hiring only in New York; for graduate traders in 2027 that is simply wrong.

Who they actually hire

Five Rings is a proprietary trading firm founded in New York in 2007, a low-hundreds-headcount shop that trades its own capital in derivatives — options and futures — on mathematical modelling and fast execution (Quantt, August 2026). It publishes no revenue, no AUM and no acceptance rate, and has given almost no interviews in nearly two decades, so most of what you can know comes from job postings and candidate reports.

The profile it recruits is narrow and consistent. Quantt's August 2026 guide describes Five Rings drawing from Putnam, IMO, ICPC and Codeforces backgrounds, and Extern (September 2026) lists the target schools as MIT, Harvard, Princeton, CMU, Oxford, Cambridge, UC Berkeley, NYU, Penn, Michigan and Imperial College London. But the screen is the real filter: the firm will interview a strong applicant from a non-target school, and it will cut a Putnam fellow who hesitates.

The track you pick matters more than most applicants realise, because the degree requirements differ:

  • Quantitative Trader — a quantitative major and Python; no PhD. This is the rapid-fire, game-heavy track.
  • Software Developer — engineering-first; C++ and Python feature in the public skill profile (Quantt, August 2026). New York and London for 2027.
  • Quantitative Researcher — a PhD in progress in CS, maths, physics, statistics or economics. Five Rings' Greenhouse board on 1 October 2026 marks the Summer Intern 2027 Quantitative Researcher role PhD-only, and it carries a take-home data project the trader track does not.

If you are a master's or undergraduate student, applying to the researcher track is a wasted slot. Apply to trader or developer.

The process, step by step

The loop is built around the screen. QuantVault's breakdown describes six stages, with the trader and researcher tracks diverging after the first technical phone:

StageFormatWhat's gradedWho runs it
Online assessmentHackerRank-style, webcam on, no calculator; ~17 min across ~17 sections (PracHub, Aug 2026) or 19 questions at 2-3 min each in older cycles (Extern)Raw speed and accuracy on estimation, number sense, probability, EVAutomated
First interview (rapid-fire)10-15 questions at ~30 sec each (Extern); Tradermath (Jul 2026) cites 10-19 at 15-30 sec, the clock covering the time to hear the questionPace under a countdown; Fermi estimation and EVTrader
Technical phone45-60 min; probability, statistics, variance, broken-stick, random-walk hitting problems (QuantVault)Depth and clean reasoning out loudQuant researcher, often PhD
Game round (trader) / Data project (researcher)Trader: interactive dice/betting session — custom-die optimisation, asymmetric dice, die-vs-deck covariance (QuantVault). Researcher: take-home, NDA-covered, "a real gate, not a formality" (QuantVault)Decision-making and EV under uncertainty; research judgmentTrader / take-home
Final day~6 hours of mixed trader, quant and developer sessions plus cultural fit; reference checks, two professional and two personal (Tradermath)Consistency and fitHead of trading, then final interviewer

Timing is rolling: Extern (September 2026) reports 21 to 28 days from application to decision. The Campus Full Time 2027 Quantitative Trader posting opened 15 July 2026 and is set to expire 27 January 2027 (Prosple), but "rolling" means the practical deadline is whenever the seats fill, not the stated expiry.

What gets people rejected

Most Five Rings rejections are not about the hardest question. They cluster in a few predictable failures:

1. Freezing on pace. One candidate on Glassdoor (retrieved October 2026) described being cut after the phone screen and wrote that the rapid-fire probability questions were not particularly difficult, but the speed and pressure were hard to handle. Another said the interview is "very tough and on your feet" and that they gauge decision-making as much as the answer. Tradermath (July 2026) is blunt that strong mathematicians fail this round purely on tempo.

2. Applying to the researcher track without a PhD. The Summer 2027 researcher role is PhD-in-progress only (Greenhouse, 1 October 2026). A master's applicant there is auto-filtered; the same person is a live candidate on the trader track.

3. Calculating silently. The OA is fill-in-the-blank, but the phone and final rounds grade spoken reasoning with the webcam on. Interviewers are watching how you think, not just the number you land on.

4. Treating it like a LeetCode shop. The trader loop is estimation, expected value and dice-and-betting games, not algorithm grinding. Candidates who over-index on data-structures prep and under-practise market-instinct questions misallocate their time.

5. Applying late. Rolling review means a good application in October outranks a better one in January, because by January the strongest desks have filled.

6. Ignoring the researcher data project. QuantVault calls it a real gate, not a formality; PhD candidates who treat it as a take-home afterthought are the ones it screens out.

A 4-week plan

This assumes you have the OA in front of you and a final loop a month out. Adjust the ratio toward speed, not depth.

  • Week 1 — build the clock. Drill mental arithmetic to the nearest integer under a visible timer: two-digit multiplication, fraction-to-decimal, square-root approximation, order-of-magnitude Fermi estimates (US daily coffee cups, pool volume, digit-frequency counts, the examples Tradermath lists). Start at 60 seconds per question and ratchet down to 30. Record yourself; the webcam is part of the real test.
  • Week 2 — probability and EV out loud. Work expected value, conditional probability, broken-stick and random-walk hitting problems, and say every step aloud. The gap between knowing the answer and narrating it in 30 seconds is the thing being graded.
  • Week 3 — games and market instinct. Practise dice and betting problems: when to take a bet, how to price a custom die, how covariance changes a die-vs-deck choice. If you are on the trader track, this round is non-negotiable; if you are a researcher, pour the hours into a clean, documented data analysis instead.
  • Week 4 — full-speed mocks. Run end-to-end timed loops, probability and market-making back to back, with someone interrupting you. The failure mode is pace collapse under pressure, so rehearse the pressure, not just the content.

Practice

Five Rings has no dedicated mock page here, so train against the firms whose loops share its shape: rapid-fire probability, expected value, and holding a market out loud under interruption.

§ 01FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How hard is it to get into Five Rings?
Neither the firm nor any aggregator publishes an acceptance rate, so judge it by format and seats, not a percentage. QuantVault's process breakdown says replies are slow and the full-time bar is brutal, and both Tradermath (July 2026) and candidate reports on Glassdoor (retrieved October 2026) say the first rapid-fire interview, not the hardest question, is where most of the field is cut. Five Rings is a low-hundreds-headcount firm (Quantt, August 2026), so there are few seats to begin with.
What is the Five Rings online assessment in 2027 recruiting?
PracHub's August 2026 write-up, built from July 2026 candidate reports, describes a HackerRank-style test of about 17 minutes across roughly 17 sections, about a minute each, with the webcam on and no calculator: estimation and order-of-magnitude reasoning, number sense, probability and expected value, and counting and sequences. Extern (updated September 2026) cites an older version of 19 questions at two to three minutes each, so the format has shifted between cycles. No official cutoff is published.
Does Five Rings require a PhD?
Only for the quantitative researcher track. Five Rings' Greenhouse board on 1 October 2026 lists the Summer Intern 2027 Quantitative Researcher role as PhD-in-progress (CS, maths, physics, statistics or economics), while the Quantitative Trader and Software Developer tracks ask for a quantitative major and Python, per Extern (September 2026). Master's and undergraduate students should apply to the trader or developer tracks, not research.
Where does Five Rings hire for 2027?
Its Greenhouse board on 1 October 2026 listed Campus Full Time 2027 Quantitative Trader roles in New York, London and Amsterdam, a Campus Full Time 2027 Software Developer role in both New York and London, and most internship tracks in New York only. That European graduate-trader hiring is recent; a January 2020 Blind thread still describes Five Rings as New York-only, which is now out of date.
Does Five Rings sponsor visas for international students?
Yes. Extern (updated September 2026) states that Five Rings sponsors H-1B visas (citing 19 LCAs filed in FY2022-2024) and offers F-1 CPT for interns. The H-1B itself is still a lottery: Techinterview's April 2026 survey of Wall Street sponsorship puts the selection rate at roughly 25-30% against an 85,000 cap, so apply to the London and Amsterdam seats as a parallel route, not a backup.
When should I apply for the 2027 cycle?
Now. Five Rings reviews on a rolling basis, with 21 to 28 days from application to decision (Extern, September 2026), and its Campus Full Time 2027 Quantitative Trader posting opened on 15 July 2026 and is set to expire 27 January 2027 (Prosple). Rolling means seats disappear over weeks, so a strong application in October beats a stronger one in January.
