Five Rings vs Jane Street (2026): Same $300K Base, Different Bet

Both firms post a $300,000 New York trader base. The gap: a 17-minute HackerRank and 15-second questions against a $39.6B firm with 3,200 staff.

Five Rings vs Jane Street (2026): Same $300K Base, Different Bet

Five Rings and Jane Street fish in the same pool — Quantt's August 2026 guide describes Five Rings recruiting heavily out of Putnam, IMO, ICPC and Codeforces backgrounds — and in New York they now advertise exactly the same trader base salary. Five Rings' Campus Full Time 2027 Quantitative Trader posting states "Annual Base Salary: $300,000" plus a discretionary bonus; Jane Street's New York Quantitative Trader posting states "Base salary is $300,000" plus an annual discretionary bonus (both retrieved 24 September 2026). The base is a tie, so the decision is everything else: a firm of a few hundred people that screens you on a 15-second clock, against one with 3,206 staff, $39.6 billion of 2025 trading revenue and a loop it describes as a conversation.

If you are fast under a countdown and want a small room, Five Rings. If you reason well but not in fifteen seconds, and you care about having somewhere to move internally in three years, Jane Street.

The 30-second verdict

Two warnings about that table. The $300,000 bases come from live postings, but Jane Street's trader posting is not graduate-specific, and Quantt's August 2026 breakdown models junior traders on a $200,000 base plus a $100,000-$150,000 signing or first-year guarantee. So read $300,000 as the top of a band, not as your offer letter. And every year-one total on both sides is an aggregator estimate built from candidate reports, not a company disclosure.

Interviews: a 15-second clock vs a conversation

The two loops test different nervous systems.

Five Rings front-loads speed. PracHub's August 2026 write-up, assembled from candidate reports in July 2026, describes the Summer 2027 quant trading assessment as a HackerRank test of roughly 17 minutes across 17 sections, about a minute each: estimation and order-of-magnitude reasoning, number sense, probability and expected value, and counting, sequences and number theory. Extern and Tradermath both cite an older version with 19 questions at two to three minutes each, so the format is moving between cycles.

Then comes the round that decides most outcomes. Tradermath's guide, published 31 July 2026, describes a 20 to 30 minute call with a short behavioural warm-up followed by 10 to 19 questions at 15 to 30 seconds each, where the countdown often covers the time it takes to hear the question as well as answer it. Its verdict on that round is blunt: it is where most candidates are eliminated, and plenty of genuinely strong mathematicians fail purely on pace. Examples it lists are Fermi work, pool volume, US daily coffee consumption, digit frequency counts, square-root approximation. After that, three or more one-to-one trader rounds on probability with 30 to 45 second windows, statistics, stochastic processes, expected value and game theory; a collaborative game round with poker-style betting and sealed-bid auctions; and a final day of about six hours with traders, quants and developers, followed by reference checks, two professional and two personal.

Jane Street front-loads arithmetic, then goes conversational. The firm's own trading interviews page says the process is phone interviews followed by an in-person final stage, that all interviews are conducted by quantitative traders, and that the final round can cover problem solving, probability and statistics, coding in a language of your choice, data analysis and general interests. It also says the experience "will feel a lot more like a conversation than a quiz" and will not require finance knowledge or higher-level college maths.

The gate it does not describe is the one candidates fixate on. Techinterview's guide, published 25 April 2026 and updated 21 July 2026, reports a mental maths test of around 60 questions in 8 minutes with no calculator and no scratch paper, with a reported pass band of roughly 70 to 85% depending on role and cycle, and calls it the gatekeeper: fail it and the resume does not matter. Then a 60-minute probability phone round with three to five problems, and market-making games where you quote a bid and an offer and update as information arrives, judged on calibration and adjustment rather than a single right answer. At the final round, most of it is a linked series of three games where the score carries over, so an early collapse follows you into the next game. OCaml is not required; Python, C++, Java or Haskell are fine.

Practically: if you can hold a market and argue with a trader for six hours, Jane Street rewards that. If your edge is being the fastest estimator in the room, Five Rings pays for it immediately.

Pay: identical base, different bonus pool

The bonus is discretionary at both firms, which means you are picking a pool, not a number.

Jane Street's pool has a public size. Bloomberg, reported via Investing.com on 8 May 2026, put Q1 2026 trading revenue at $16.1 billion and net income at $10.3 billion, both more than double Q1 2025, after a record $39.6 billion of trading revenue in 2025. Set that against Revelio Labs' March 2026 headcount of 3,206 and 2025 revenue alone works out near $12 million per current employee. Five Rings publishes nothing: no revenue, no AUM, no headcount. Quantt's August 2026 guide describes it as low hundreds of people trading proprietary capital, and Tradermath notes there are no external investors, which is the whole argument for a small pool shared by few people, and also the whole risk.

On internships the numbers are unusually close. Extern's guide, updated September 2026, gives Five Rings interns a $300,000 annualised base, about $52,000 over nine weeks plus a signing bonus and corporate housing in New York, and cites a ranking of the fourth highest-paying internship of 2026 at roughly $67,000 total. Jane Street's intern pay is described by Young and Calculated in June 2026 as the annualised equivalent of $300,000.

For scale on how narrow any of these doors are, the same June 2026 piece reports Citadel taking fewer than 300 interns from more than 108,000 applications, about 0.4%. Neither Five Rings nor Jane Street publishes an equivalent figure, and anyone quoting one for them is guessing.

Size, seats and what year one looks like

Jane Street tells you what junior means on the posting itself: new traders serve as assistants while they learn the ropes, with responsibility increasing as they demonstrate they can handle it. It also says prior knowledge of finance or economics is not expected. That is a training programme, and at 3,206 people, growing 18.7% since 2023 per Revelio Labs, with reported expansion in Hong Kong and London (Crypto Briefing, 19 June 2026), it is also an internal job market you can move around in.

Five Rings is the opposite trade. Quantt's pitch for the firm is "very hard problems, very small teams", and it describes strategies going from insight to implementation in days or weeks, language the firm's own site uses too. Fewer people means earlier ownership and fewer places to hide.

One old data point is worth correcting, because it still circulates. A January 2020 Blind thread comparing exactly these two offers has a commenter saying Five Rings only hires interns and new grads, only in New York, and another estimating 10 to 12 hour days at Five Rings against about nine at Jane Street. The hours claim is six years old and unverifiable; the geography claim is now simply wrong. Five Rings' own board on 24 September 2026 listed Campus Full Time 2027 trader roles in New York, London and Amsterdam, a London software developer role, and multiple experienced or lateral openings.

International students: sponsorship, then geography

Both firms sponsor, so the differentiator is how many jurisdictions they let you try.

Extern's guide, updated September 2026, states that Five Rings offers H-1B sponsorship and F-1 CPT for interns. Techinterview's 30 April 2026 survey of Wall Street sponsorship, built on USCIS disclosures and the MyVisaJobs and H1Bgrader datasets, lists Jane Street among the active H-1B sponsors among prop firms and puts the H-1B selection rate at roughly 25 to 30% against an annual cap of 85,000. That lottery is the same lottery for both.

What differs is the fallback. Five Rings' London and Amsterdam graduate trader postings exist and their application forms ask about local work eligibility and sponsorship, which means a European route that did not exist in the version of Five Rings most forum posts describe. Jane Street's non-US hiring is larger and older. If the US lottery goes against you, apply to both firms twice: once in New York, once in London.

One tactical note for the Summer 2027 cycle: Five Rings' quantitative researcher internship is for PhD candidates in CS, maths, physics, statistics or economics per Extern, while the trader track asks for a quantitative major. Master's students should apply to the trader and software developer tracks, not the research one.

Which should you choose?

  • You are the fastest estimator in your cohort. Five Rings. Its screen pays for exactly that skill, and Tradermath's account suggests it is where the field thins.
  • You are strong but deliberate. Jane Street. Its stated style is a conversation with traders, and it hires without expecting finance knowledge.
  • You want a training programme and internal mobility. Jane Street, at 3,206 people against low hundreds.
  • You want ownership in year one and a small room. Five Rings.
  • You need a visa and want more than one shot. Apply to both in New York and in London; Five Rings now posts London and Amsterdam graduate trader seats.
  • You are a PhD. Five Rings' research internship is PhD-only; Jane Street runs a separate Graduate Research Fellowship for PhD students in maths, CS, physics and statistics (its programs and events page).
  • You want a public balance sheet behind your bonus. Jane Street publishes results through the press; Five Rings publishes nothing.

Prepare for both

The overlap in preparation is large: timed probability, expected value, market making out loud, and clean explanation under interruption.

Frequently asked questions

Is Five Rings harder to get into than Jane Street?
Neither firm publishes an acceptance rate, so the honest answer is about seats and about format. Quantt's August 2026 guide puts Five Rings at a low-hundreds headcount; Revelio Labs counted 3,206 people at Jane Street as of March 2026, so Jane Street simply has more seats. On format, Five Rings is harder to survive early: Tradermath's July 2026 guide describes a first round of 10 to 19 questions at 15 to 30 seconds each, with the clock covering the time it takes to hear the question, and says this is where most candidates are eliminated.
Do Five Rings and Jane Street pay the same?
Their published New York trader bases are identical. Five Rings' Campus Full Time 2027 Quantitative Trader posting states an annual base salary of $300,000 plus a discretionary bonus, and Jane Street's New York Quantitative Trader posting also states a $300,000 base plus an annual discretionary bonus (both retrieved 24 September 2026). Year-one totals are where estimates diverge: Quantt's August 2026 pages model $400,000 to $700,000 for graduate traders at both firms, with the bonus doing all the work.
What is the Five Rings online assessment in 2027 recruiting?
PracHub's August 2026 write-up, built from candidate reports in July 2026, describes a HackerRank assessment of about 17 minutes across 17 sections, roughly a minute each, covering estimation and order-of-magnitude reasoning, number sense and mental arithmetic, probability and expected value, and counting, sequences and number theory. Older reports cited by Extern and Tradermath describe 19 questions at 2 to 3 minutes each, so the format has been changing between cycles. No official cutoff has been published.
Does Five Rings hire outside New York?
Yes, and that is new. A Blind thread from January 2020 said Five Rings only hired interns and new grads and only in New York. Its own job board on 24 September 2026 listed Campus Full Time 2027 Quantitative Trader roles in New York, London and Amsterdam, a Campus Full Time 2027 Software Developer role in London, and several experienced or lateral positions. All Summer 2027 internship tracks are still New York only, per Extern's guide updated in September 2026.
Which is better for an international student who needs a visa?
Both sponsor, and both hand you the same lottery. Extern's guide, updated September 2026, states that Five Rings offers H-1B sponsorship and F-1 CPT for interns. Techinterview's April 2026 survey of Wall Street sponsorship lists Jane Street among the active H-1B sponsors in the prop trading group, and puts the H-1B selection rate at roughly 25 to 30% against an 85,000 cap. The tie-breaker is geography: Jane Street hires in Hong Kong, Singapore and London, and Five Rings now posts graduate trader seats in London and Amsterdam.
When should I apply for 2027?
Now. Five Rings' Summer 2027 roles have been open since July 2026 and are reviewed on a rolling basis, with 21 to 28 days from application to decision (Extern, September 2026). Young and Calculated's June 2026 piece makes the general point that quant recruiting opens in August and the best desks fill first. Jane Street says it responds to every application, ideally within a week or so.
