Why Amazon SDE1 trips up candidates who pass other FAANG loops
Per IGotAnOffer's Amazon LP guide and 2025 candidate reports, 25% of candidates who clear Amazon's technical bar still get rejected on Leadership Principles. The LP dimension isn't a tiebreaker the way Googleyness can be at Google L3 — it's a primary screening dimension, with each interviewer assigned 2-3 specific LPs to grade. Each coding round ends with LP follow-ups, the OA includes a work-style simulation, and the Bar Raiser explicitly tests Dive Deep and Deliver Results.
Candidates who under-prepare LP stories — or prepare a single rehearsed story per principle and get exposed by the 5-8 min follow-up — produce the most common SDE1 rejection pattern. The fix is structural: 6-8 flex stories with metrics, framed in 'I' not 'we', that adapt to whichever LP a follow-up targets. Memorizing all 16 LPs as separate stories is the wrong strategy.
The Bar Raiser is real but its veto is rarely used (one BR reported never vetoing across 700+ interviews). What's common is the BR pushing the panel toward a no-hire when LP signal is mixed — practical effect of veto power without exercising it.
